Clay Markwell, M.S., LAC, LPCC: Mental Health Clinician, Wellness Guide, Addiction Professional, Person in Recovery

About me

My passion lies in helping individuals and families overcome addiction or other maladaptive behaviors—such as compulsive habits, negative self-beliefs, or unproductive thought patterns—to relieve suffering and live an intentional life: a life designed with purpose rather than lived by default.

What I Offer

My clients often seek an active, holistic approach that considers diet, exercise, and other lifestyle factors. I welcome those in recovery, people navigating life transitions, and anyone striving for purposeful, meaningful change

  • Addiction, compulsive or self-destructive behaviors, trauma, or living out of alignment with who you truly are can feel like an endless loop—a life out of balance with your authentic self. If you’re stuck, struggling, or feeling dismantled by your circumstances, I say: congratulations. When the pain of staying the same outweighs the fear of change, you’ve found fertile ground for growth and transformation. This struggle, this conflict, this confrontation holds the potential energy to create something entirely new. Lean into it. Change is a fundamental substrate of the universe, and you have arrived here because you, too, are seeking change.

  • I work with couples and families to navigate the complexities of relationships, focusing on rebuilding trust, improving communication, and promoting emotional cohesion.

My approach emphasizes open, direct communication and personalized guidance to foster understanding and healing within the family unit.

Whether addressing relational strains in couples or complexities within a family system, I focus on identifying shared goals and nurturing healthy interaction patterns. For families navigating addiction, I help each member understand the impact of substance use, while guiding them toward practical strategies that support both individual recovery and collective well-being.

How we can work together

We are mechanisms of the stories we tell ourselves. Stories form meaning, meaning forms beliefs, and beliefs form our identity. The old pine that has weathered the cadence of harsh seasons and storms alike—replete with scars and knots—has a story to tell, too. Every ring in the old pine’s trunk tells a story of survival and growth; your own story—even the painful parts—can reveal sources of strength, resilience, and meaning where you may only see pain.

True transformation, true healing, true change begin when we own every part of our story: the triumphs and the shortcomings, the trauma and the past, the limiting self-beliefs, addiction, or compulsions that we hide from view—these are our knots and scars; these are our growth story too, if we choose to own them. True ownership and transformation is about looking at the mess and saying, “That’s mine too.” Our work together is about embracing every facet of your experience, examining the stories we tell ourselves about our past, trauma, or perceived inadequacies/flaws, and crafting a new narrative that recognizes resilience where you may only see shame. One where we no longer look at the cracks in our armor as flaws, but as openings for light to pour in and growth to take root.
